Emergency Shelter Scope and Conditions of Use
For the women and children who do stay in The Cathedral Center emergency shelter, groups of volunteers from area churches provide an evening snack, a lunch for the next day and caring, social interaction.
Women and families do not “live” at The Cathedral Center in the traditional sense. They must leave the facility between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. each day. They may store a few belongings if they plan to return that night.
When a client leaves The Cathedral Center for permanent housing, The Cathedral Center staff continues to work with the family to ensure progress in attaining their educational and employment goals.
By the Numbers
In 2008, The Cathedral Center served 539 single women, 328 families with 851 children – a total of 1,718 individuals or 867 households.
The shelter program alone served 1,286 individuals, 539 single women and 215 families with 532 children. 60% of total households served were placed in long-term transitional, permanent or independent housing. The Cathedral Center has seen an increase of roughly 35% over the last three years of clients served, as public funding continues to flatten.
