Milwaukee, WI – The Fourth Annual Cathedral Center Fall Gala and Woman of the Word Award will again honor a Milwaukee woman whose actions match her words and have a significant impact on our community. The Cathedral Center will proudly honor Gwen T. Jackson, community volunteer and activist, at the Gala to be held on Thurs., Nov. 5th from 5-8pm at the Atrium of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 812 N Jackson St.

Gwen T. Jackson has served as an unwavering volunteer with the American Red Cross, Greater Milwaukee Chapter for 48 years and counting. She has taken on a variety of leadership roles within the Milwaukee Chapter as well as nationally. Representing the American Red Cross, Gwen served as a member of The Cathedral Center’s Founding Board of Directors. In this role, Gwen openly shared her experience, insight and compassion for the human spirit in part shaping the mission and values of The Cathedral Center.

The Woman of the Word Award began in 2005. Past recipients include The Honorable Janine Geske for her work in restorative justice, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporter Meg Kissinger and Marquette University’s Women’s Basketball Coach Terri Mitchell.

Each year the Gala attracts many significant Milwaukee area community members and leaders. This year’s attendees include Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, Representative Gwen Moore, Auxiliary Bishop Sklba and more.

Cathedral Center event sponsors include the Erica P. John Fund, Quarles & Brady, LLP, Godfrey, Braun & Frazier, LLP, , Metavante Corporation, WE Energies Foundation, Park Bank Foundation, Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare and many more.

The evening’s festivities include a wine tasting presented by the M Café and a sampling of appetizers and desserts donated by Milwaukee area restaurants. The Cathedral Center is proud to work with volunteers from Divine Savior Holy Angels High School, the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra and more to present this unique and enjoyable event.

Tickets are $50 per person and sponsorship opportunities are still available. All proceeds will benefit the Cathedral Center and its mission to provide a safe environment for women and families who are experiencing a housing crisis while working to end homelessness, one life at a time.

In 2010, The Cathedral Center provided critical services to 934 individuals; 549 individual women and 112 families with 273 children in its emergency shelter alone. According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, women and families make up the fastest growing segment of the homeless population.
